WEDNESDAYITE CHARITY BIKE RIDE 2012: B2BW IS GO!

DONATE NOW!

We've got a cracking end to the season - as well as what will be a challenging one for some of our Directors and ex-Owls legends!

We're organising a Charity Bike Ride from Griffin Park, Brentford F.C. in London back to Bluebell Wood Children's Hospice, near Sheffield, with all proceeds going to Bluebell Wood!

Setting off after the final match of the season at Brentford on April 28th, our intrepid explorers will cover a total of 185 miles and conclude their ride at Bluebell Wood on May 1st. Our team includes Wednesdayite Chairman Nigel Short, Financial Director Paul Holmes and - returning for more punishment - Owls legend David Hirst!

This is the second time that we've done something as crazy as this for a good cause - our cyclists and back-up team previously did a Coast to Coast ride in 2009, and raised thousands, so we're hoping to repeat our success!

The aim of this challenge is to raise funds for Bluebell Wood. Wednesdayite Director Peter Shaw explains:

"Bluebell Wood Children's Hospice supports and cares for local children with shortened life expectancy. It offers emergency, respite and end of life care for babies, children and young adults with very complex medical needs. Bluebell Wood is the only Children's hospice within South Yorkshire, North Derbyshire, North Nottinghamshire and North West Lincolnshire. It costs over £3 million every year to provide this care and the hospice receives no statutory government funding. Please donate as generously as you can. It is much appreciated."

Donating through JustGiving is simple, fast and totally secure. Your details are safe with JustGiving – they’ll never sell them on or send unwanted emails. Once you donate, they’ll send your money directly to the charity and make sure Gift Aid is reclaimed on every eligible donation by a UK taxpayer. So it’s the most efficient way to donate - we raise more, whilst saving time and cutting costs for the charity.

We'll be giving weekly updates between now and the Brentford match with the tale of the preparations and how the riders are feeling about the task in hand, so keep it tuned to Wednesdayite.com and learn how you can get involved. In the meantime, the donation bucket is open - so please dig deep and donate now!

THE WEDNESDAY CRICKET CLUB: THE TOM MARSDEN TROPHY

CRICKET CLUB

The Wednesday Cricket Club, working in conjunction with the city Lord Mayors Office together with the financial help of the Sheffield Wednesday Supporters Society, Wednesdayite are proud to announce that the trophy named in tribute to one of the most famous sporting fathers of Sheffield is to be resurrected as a living trophy.

Tom Marsden was for many years the best single wicket cricketer in the north of England, and, not short on confidence, he put up a £50 reward for anyone to beat him, and remained undefeated for the best part of a decade!

Hosted by the Thorncliffe Cricket Club on Monday June the 4th the trophy will be competed in a twenty 20 format between The Wednesday, Thorncliffe and two further teams from which application is sought. The Trophy is expected to be a significant fund raiser for the hosts, Wednesday CC and more importantly The Sheffield Children Hospital, to this end sponsors are sought.

Wednesdayite Vice-Chair Eddie Hoyland commented "Wednesdayite are proud to support the rebirth of the Tom Marsden Trophy - it represents part of an unbroken lineage that takes the Wednesday sporting organisation back to 1820, which would potentially make us the oldest sports team in the world! Wednesdayite shares the community focus and aims of the Wednesday CC and we are wholeheartedly behind the cricket club's continued progress as they help spread the Wednesday name to whole new audiences."

OWLS BLOG: SMILE LORD HILLSBOROUGH!

FAN BLOG

Lord Hillsborough recently attended the Steel City derby versus Sheffield United, not as you may think as a VIP, but as a guest of our SMILE tickets scheme.

The Lord tells us about his day and a little but about SMILE with his latest blog for Wednesdayite.com.

"Pip pip Chaps and Chapettes, and once again thank you for joining me for my lordly ramblings. I would like to start off with a confession, there is no getting around it, and I would like to be utterly honest with my fellow Wednesdayites. I, the Lord of Hillsborough, have fallen on hard times.

I would like to assure you that this is through no fault of my own. I do live rather a humble life style. I don't throw money about on partridge stuffed with peacock tongue, fur lined undergarments or any of the usual Lordly caper.

Every Lord is issued with a Jeeves as standard by the Lords Council and is expected to make it last for as long as possible. Lording isn't the money spinner it used to be which is why you don't see many about. And the recent financial climate has forced me to make sacrifices that I would otherwise not consider."

OWLS POUR PRESSURE ON BLADES WITH ANOTHER FINE WIN

The weekend saw Wednesday pull out the most exciting ten minutes of football in the last decade, as they raced to a 3-0 lead over Bournemouth before some Owls had polished off their pre-match pies!

Goals from Baath, Bennett and a screamer from Barack Obama's nephew and the man who invented the question mark, Michail Antonio were enough to put Wednesday out of sight, and they kicked back into third gear to see out the remaining 80 minutes.

The Blades had to win to maintain their slim lead over the Owls, and duly did, but not only did fellow challengers Huddersfield drop points, but the Blades could only manage a point at Colchester with their game in hand, leaving Wednesday within position to overtake the porkers as soon as they slip up.

WYLDE TO SPEAK AT DOOLEY DINNER

IFormer Sheffield Wednesday star Rodger Wylde will speak at a dinner in aid of the Derek Dooley Football Academy (DDFA) at Baldwin's Omega next month. Wylde, who started his career at Hillsborough and scored 54 goals in 168 appearances for Wednesday, has spent the last 25 years as physio at Stockport County.

Entertainment will also be provided by female vocal duo Honey Honey at the event on Thursday, April 19 (7pm for 7.30pm) with Sky Sports reporter Nick Johnson acting as MC. Tickets for the event, priced at just £30, can be booked by contacting Sam at Baldwin's on 0114 255 1818 or email sam@baldwins omega.com.

The DDFA was formed as a lasting tribute to Derek Dooley MBE, helping amputees and people with additional needs get involved in football. Together with Sheffield & Hallamshire FA, the organisation recently helped organise a Deaf Football Festival which was held in Sheffield.
