    WEDNESDAYITE WEEKLY

NOW GET US ROARING YOU ON

    EDDIEtorial

The rot was stopped in dramatic fashion on Tuesday night, as the Owls came from behind three times to earn a point at Burnley. But the real story was the return of the insane, dominant vocal passion of the Wednesday fans, who left Owls skipper Martin Taylor in awe of the Wednesday roar.

Last season we lost count of the number of times the players and management alluded to the impact that the Owls fans had in spurring the team on to win games they could have drawn and drawn games they could have lost. Not only were we feared and respected by other teams for the noise we brought away from home, but the atmosphere at Hillsborough was absolutely electric - never more so than on occasions like the Kop practically sucking the ball into the net in injury time against Carlisle.

It's been a tough few weeks and we've seen not only the belief and fervour of the fans dented by some flat on-pitch performances, but also the ugly spectacle of some of our...(note: insert synonym for 'clueless simpletons' before sending out the Weekly)...fans booing our own players or setting about Dave Jones. It's easy to forget that up until last year we had precious little to cheer about, but we always knew that as soon as the team showed their pride and passion in playing for SWFC, the legendary noise of Hillsborough's finest would return.

So to the team - play like you did against Burnley (well, going forward at least) and we'll show you what we can do. And to the fans - sing your hearts out for the lads. See you at Hillsborough tomorrow.

    Up The Owls!

    Eddie

OWLS BLOG: KIRKLAND NOT THE CAUSE OF WEDNESDAY'S WOES

    OWLS BLOG

Regular Owls Blogger Richard Brook brings us his latest blog to Wednesdayite.com, Richard is a 31-year-old life-long Wednesday supporter, and amateur football writer. He lives with his wife and three Wednesday brain washed children. Like most of his generation Richard’s heroes were Hirst, Waddle and Sheridan, and as goalkeeper himself Kevin Pressman.

"There seems to be an odd misconception flying around Sheffield Wednesday fan’s internet sites of choice at the moment. Namely that the Owls’ new recruit between the sticks, Chris Kirkland, is an inferior option in terms of organising his back four. I have read many calls over recent weeks, during the indifferent run of form that saw Wednesday lose their last four league matches on the bounce, for Stephen Bywater to replace Kirkland in goal.
In truth, any goalkeeper is always a soft target for fans of a team that is conceding too many goals, even when the goals going in are through no fault of his own. The Owls certainly have been conceding too many goals this season. Even when Wednesday were riding high in the upper echelons of the Championship, in the early part of the season, they found themselves conceding two goals every league game."

    OWLS BLOG: PLUG THE LEAK

    OWLS BLOG

Our regular Owls blogger Joe Crann returns to Wednesdayite.com with his latest blog and attempts a rallying call with the Owls having lost five in a row, hoping to end that run at Wolves on Saturday. Joe is based in South Africa and is a journalist for Soccer-Laduma, Africa’s biggest football publication. He's Sheffield born and bred and moved over to Cape Town, South Africa in 2011.

"Well, we’re now 10 games into the season and, in all competitions we’ve conceded 20 goals. Not ideal for a team that, last month, had fans dreaming of a second consecutive promotion.
Now, just a matter of weeks later, we’re sat 21st in the league, out of the Credit Card Cup and without a league win in four games, time to despair? I think not. Time to double up our support? Damn straight…

Already I’ve heard people calling for Dave Jones head. Seriously? The man who helped us steamroll our way into the Championship, the man who, until September 1st, was credited for helping turn Wednesday into Premiership hopefuls.

Really? I mean I know football fans are fickle. I know that, over the years, we’ve seen our fair share of numptys come in through the managerial doors at Hillsborough and leave with their tail between their legs having achieved sweet FA. However, we’ve finally got something going for us. Why throw away the first bit of stability that we’ve had in a long time because of a bit of a barren spell."

DEFIANT OWLS SHOW SPIRIT AT LAST

Tuesday certainly felt like a watershed, didn't it? The never-say-die attitude that characterised last season was back in abundance as the Owls refused to lie down for Burnely and came away from Turf Moor with a point. Even more positively, there were some standout performances from players who badly needed a confidence boost. Chris 'The Rock' O'Grady bagged an impressive brace and was excellent throughout as the lone central striker. Jose Semedo was back to something approaching his terrier-like best. And Jay Bothroyd showed exactly what Dave Jones sees in him with an imperious performance of real class.

While it's still clear that the defence is a worry, the 4-3-3 formation looked a world away from the mess of recent games, and tactically a much better fit for our squad. Let's build on the positives tomorrow.
