WEDNESDAYITE WEEKLY

STRIKERS: THEY'RE ALL THE RAGE THESE DAYS

EDDIEtorial

If the saloon bar moanings I've heard this week are any indication, then the hot new topic on the lips of every fan this week is men whose job it is to put the old ball in the old onion bag.

Maybe the trend for discussing 'goal-chaps' (as they probably called strikers in the Sheffield Telegraph in the 1890s, when Alan Biggs was still a cub reporter) stems from the simply ludicrous display of winning by Zlatan 'can't do it against English teams' Ibrahimovic this week. But nevertheless, Owls fans have been full of forward banter all week.

The biggest debate has been around the Gary Madine-is-he-going-on-loan-hang-on-he's-scored-better-send-O'Grady-out-instead-wait-a-minute-HOW-much-are-we-paying-Bothroyd situation.

For those of you who can't understand my summary of events above, Madine seemed to be nailed on to head into the loving arms of Paolo di Canio, until scoring against Boro and immediately re-establishing himself as the all-conquering Goal Machine. Consequently, fans started mooting that Chris 'Cogba' O'Grady would be the man through the temporary exit, before tabloid tittle-tattle in the form of an interview with World's Fattest Man James Beattie (1125 days 17 hours and 08 minutes since his last goal) somehow led to Owls fans thinking that we were paying Jay Bothroyd ONE MIIIIIIIIIILLION DOLLARS a week.

And waiting in the sidelines are names like Sunderland's Connor Wickham, who hasn't exactly set the Premiership on fire with his goals, but surely would make at least the same impact at this level as Ross 'Take It To The Bank' Barkley. What's certain is that if Milan and DJ are serious about surviving and thriving in this division, they're going to have to flash the cash on wages for a proper goalgetter. This team would be comfortably top half if we had a hitman firing bullets regularly - and it seems increasingly unlikely that our current strikeforce are able to step up to the plate.

In any case, the next test for the Owls is a tough one, away at fellow members of the 'They Used To Be Bloody Good' club, Nottingham Forest. If you're one of the 4000 or so that's going to be there, make sure you roar the boys on. They need backing, and the Owls away fans are just the ticket for that.

Up The Owls!

Eddie

OWLS BLOG: AN OPEN LETTER TO THE SWFC BASHERS

OWLS BLOG

Following making every Leeds fan in the world angry with his last blog, our regular Owls blogger Joe Crann returns to Wednesdayite.com with his latest blog and this time out tackles the boo boys online. Joe is based in South Africa and is a journalist for Soccer-Laduma, Africa’s biggest football publication. He's Sheffield born and bred and moved over to Cape Town, South Africa in 2011.

"To Whom It May Concern,
Of late Sheffield Wednesday players have been taking a bit of a beating on social sites such as Twitter, being criticised for their lack of talent, their hairstyle, the way that they breathe, and every other aspect of their lives that some people think deserves to be scrutinised.

Look, we all know that this season hasn’t quite panned out like many an optimistic Wednesdayite had hoped that it would. I know we’re not challenging for the title or repeating heroic comebacks week after week, but something the guys do seem to be doing is showing a bit of battle."

MATCH BLOG: MIDDLESBROUGH

MATCH BLOG

Matt Savage and his armchair return to take on the story of the Owls' season. Last Friday's trip to Boro goes under his microscope.

"The Owls travel to the tip of North Yorkshire to face the in-form Middlesborough, with a near sell-out stadium and the biggest attendance at the Riverside Stadium since Manchester United visited in 2009. If Middlesborough win they climb to the summit of English footballs second tier. An impeccable 2min silence of remembrance preceded the opening whistle.

The visitors started well and put the high flying Boro' under early pressure. An early break down the right and cross by Lewis Buxton dealt with by Jonathan Woodgate, captain of the home side. A quick counter forces a corner that is swung in by Grant Leadbitter, Chris Kirkland tipping it over the crossbar for a second corner - which again is dealt with by the Owls stopper. When Andre Bikey fouls Gary Madine, Wednesday work a free-kick seeing Miguel Llera fire at goal - easily saved by England U21 keeper Jason Steele."

ENJOY SEMEDO DAY!

The buzz around José Semedo Day at Forest tomorrow is...well - the only word is MASSIVE.

Over 4000 Semedo masks have been printed up and thanks not only to your supporter's club Wednesdayite, but also the great folks at Whitehouse Construction - AND of course Neil and all the team at Owlstalk, you'll be able to grab one on the turnstiles and make it a day to remember!

So get your Portugal flags and shirts out, don't let anybody past you and channel the spirit of Semedo. Probably best not to go in blackface though - that sort of thing isn't really approved of these days.

We hope to see you there - it's going to be a party atmosphere, and hopefully will spur José and the team on to victory!

PECNIK ON THE MARK FOR HIS COUNTRY

While we've all been ringing our hands over the striker situation at S6, forgotten man of Hillsborough Nejc Pecnick popped up with a brace for Slovenia in their 3-2 defeat to Macedonia in the week.

Here's hoping Nejc returned to Hillsborough rejuvenated by his exploits for his national team and can give something new to SWFC - we could certainly do with two goals per game!
