    WEDNESDAYITE WEEKLY

    HAVE WE JUST STRENGTHENED?

    EDDIEtorial

It was a deadline day of sorts yesterday as the loan window closed, with local clubs doing brisk business to bring in players to help them through the brutal Christmas run of games. With our city neighbours deciding that it was more important to try to come up with an original idea to get the crowds flooding back to the Lane (hint: please don't try Chris Porter Day) and therefore not adding a single player to their ranks (presumably Agent Wilson's plan involves injuries ravaging their squad, seeing them collapse again from a position of dominance), the Owls added two Premier League names to the squad list.

You might think that this would have Wednesdayites taking to the airwaves and internets in a flurry of excitement to celebrate the Owls securing the services of two players who had plied their trade in the promised land of milk and honey (I'm talking about the Premier League, not Stoke). But instead the response has varied from 'muted' to 'furious German child bashing the hell out of his computer in anger'.

So why? Well, those who lean towards the purity of raw data point to the fact that Mamady Sidebe hasn't played a full game since approximately 1997, whilst those who seek the opinions of neutrals would have us listen to Shrewsbury Town fans on Twitter who didn't feel Jeremy Helan added anything to their squad in the division below ours.

It's easy to judge based on things like 'fact' and 'informed opinion' of course. 24 goals in eight seasons isn't a strike rate that inspires, sure. But if there's one thing that trumps reason, it's faith (note: check with Richard Dawkins that this is correct before sending out) and when it comes down to it, IN DAVE WE TRUST. Jonesey clearly sees Sidebe and Helan as the round pegs to fit into Daniel Jones and Gary Madine-shaped holes, so he must have a plan.

All I'm saying is that he'd better have a plan B. Let's get behind the new boys tomorrow again Leicester and come away with the three points. Piece of cake.

    Up The Owls!

    AWAY COACH XMAS SPECIAL!

    XMAS AWAY COACH

The decorations are going up in the shops on Fargate and the telly’s full of tear-jerking adverts for department stores – it can only mean Christmas is on its way! For football fans, Christmas is always a special time because the games come thick and fast – and because every point really matters as we move into the second half of the season.

So, with tickets for the Owls’ away trip to neighbours Barnsley going on sale with Wednesday receiving an initial allocation of 5,700, we expect to see the usual massive away following at Oakwell from the SWFC fans. The commitment of our amazing away supporters has been a huge part of our recent success, and at Wednesdayite we want to do something to say thanks to the best fans in the land!

That’s why we’re making the Barnsley trip our first ‘members day’ – with the double bonus of it being a cracking Christmas saver. The Wednesdayite Away Coach is priced at £10 for non-members this time out, but we’re offering our members the chance to travel on our brilliant Away Coach service for just £3!

So if you’re a Wednesdayite member you can get to the match for less than it costs for a pint in the pub beforehand – and if you’re not a current member (look at the top of this email and check your expiry date), then now’s the perfect time to sign up at wednesdayite.com/join and not only qualify for the Barnsley Members’ Day, but also become entitled to all the brilliant money-saving Wednesdayite member benefits.

Whether you’re an existing member or have just signed up, it’s then as easy as booking your place on our coaches to Oakwell below – we’ll collect your £3 on the day and ferry you up the A61 and back again where hopefully we’ll see the mighty Owls smash our South Yorkshire rivals.

Still not convinced? Well, how’s about this – every Wednesdayite member (i.e, those who got their trip for £3) on the coach goes into a draw with a first prize of £50 per coach and two runners-up prizes of £10 – meaning you can have your whole day paid for and still have change for a celebratory curry on Saturday night!

    MATCH BLOG: FOREST

    MATCH BLOG

Matt Savage is a man with a dream. A dream to review an entire season from the comfort of his trusty armchair. Nottingham isn't as comfy at all, so here he is to talk Forest.

"A fantastic spectacle of fan appreciation took place at the City Ground when Forest hosted the Owls. As 4,405 Wednesday fans filled the away end, it was clear to see the love the fans have of the midfield enforcer Jose Semedo. Masks, green & maroon balloons, inflatables and numerous Portuguese flags filled the stand as 'Semedo Day' was in full swing.
The party atmosphere had many Forest fans bemused as the sheer volume and effort put in by the travelling Owls rocked the City Ground. When the opening whistle sounded, the chanting began - "oh oh oh he's magic, you know - you'll never get past Semedo!" and the game was underway. Keen to keep the fans in buoyant spirits, Wednesday started well and a fierce direct shot by the recalled Gary Madine tested the home keeper and the Owls earned the first corner. Only 2mins later and Jay Bothroyd also forces a corner out of Lee Camp, both defended well by Forest.

Eager not to be overrun by the travelling team, the Reds then break well and only a fine save by Chris Kirkland prevents Andy Reid from scoring. After another Bothroyd corner is dealt with, Forest counter and Reid crosses for Dexter Blackstock who sees his rising shot go over the bar. In a good spell for Forest, chances go begging for Greg Halford and but for some excellent defending by Anthony Gardner, Forest would lead. The centre-back blocking two goal-bound efforts for corners which are easily cleared.

The Semedo chant gets good backing when the midfielder breaks up a good Forest move much to the delight of the away fans. On the 20th minute, a Bothroyd corner finds recalled (and restyled) Nejc Pecnik who sees Jermaine Jenas charge down his shot. The Owls almost score again but Madines header goes narrowly wide with the keeper rooted. Moments later and calls for a penalty are waved away as a handball in the Forest box goes unpunished. Daniel Jones, who has come under recent criticism for his advanced mentality, is notably not passing the half way line and does seen to be positionally aware so far. A spate of free kicks disrupt the flow of the game as neither side make much process."

LINESY HOPES TO BE BACK; TALKS ABOUT DEATH OF HIS DAD

There won't be a more welcome sight at S6 than the eventual return from injury of class-on-grass merchant Chris Lines, who is hopeful of making his return to action against Leicester tomorrow.

He spoke to Matt Hall at the Sheffield Telegraph about his injury and, poignantly, about the death of his father when Lines was just starting out in his career. It's a really compelling read - check it out here.

WEDNESDAYITE TWITTER PASSES THE 10K MARK

One of the most enjoyable and successful things we do here at Wednesdayite Towers is engage with Owls fans all across the world on our Twitter feed. It's great to be a focal point for all the (sometimes weird and wonderful) news from Wednesday fans in every corner of this rock we call Earth, and even greater to be involved in huge SWFC moments.

This week for example, we had #SemedoDay trending worldwide (that's Twitter speak meaning WE ARE MASSIVE), and loads of fans at the match and at home posted photos of their Semedo outfits, banners, flags and celebrations.

We recently passed 10,000 followers, which is streets ahead of 90% of the footballing world, but also puts us on a par with The Shropshire Star newspaper (although some way behind Helen Flanagan from I'm A Celebrity). Heady days indeed!

So head over to Twitter and join the conversation!
