    WEDNESDAYITE WEEKLY

OUR BOY GETS HIS SPECIAL DAY

    EDDIEtorial

When we at Wednesdayite were offered the chance to adopt one of the Owls' first team squad for the season as player sponsors, there was some spirited discussion around who we should pick. Some thought that the Goal Machine was the natural choice. Many argued that the undoubted hero of last season, José Semedo, should get the nod. And Chairman Nigel somewhat bizarrely proposed Gary Bannister.

But if there was one man who epitomised the spirit, togetherness and optimism of the summer, it was the lustrous-haired, glistening-eyed Spanish god who walks amongst us. But when we plumped for Big Mig, we did wonder how much game time the Iberian outhouse would actually get, never mind whether he could step up and dominate in the Championship like he had in League One.

Well, I think we have all had that question answered in recent weeks. Llera is part of an imposing and confident back five at Hillsborough, and as dangerous a proposition going forward as he's always been. And all while being one of the nicest guys in football.

So it's especially heartwarming that following the success of Semedo Day earlier this season, the home game against league leaders Cardiff on March 16th is going to play host to Llera Day - and hopefully inspire the Matador of the Massive and his team mates to a win against tough opposition.

We've got just over a month to prepare - so clear the shops out of scrumcaps, get those Spanish flags ordered, iron your Flamenco costume and if possible go to the gym and sculpt your body so you too are a 6-foot-6 man mountain with the mane of an emo lion. Big Mig loves us - let's show him that he means a lot to us too!

Meanwhile, the Owls go from strength to strength with another assured performance against Brighton last weekend. There really is a head of steam building up behind our team now - with Derby coming to town tomorrow we need to keep the momentum going and drive the mighty Wednesday up the table. So get behind the lads and give them the same positive support that we had against the Seagulls last time out.

I hope to see you at Hillsborough tomorrow!

    Up The Owls!

    Eddie

    MATCH BLOG: BRIGHTON

    MATCH BLOG

Matt Savage, the scourge of settee upholsterers up and down the nation, is back with his latest tale of Wednesday derring-do...

"The most talked about stat amongst the 2 sets of fans was that Brighton had never beaten Wednesday at Hillsborough, a fact that had a real chance of being scrapped this time round as The Seagulls come to Sheffield with ambitions of a playoff place. The Owls have seemingly turned a corner since their 2-3 home loss against strugglers Bristol City at the start of December - and go into the match in a rich vein of form.
The game gets off to a quick start when only 4mins in and the home team are celebrating. A Michail Antonio cross from the left floats past debutant Matt Upson (on loan from Stoke City) and Leroy Lita meets the ball in mid-air to volley past the sprawling goalkeeper and fire Wednesday into the lead. The striker has made it 2 goals in 2 appearances and his 'massive' hand gesture goal celebration goes down well with the jubilant fans. Brighton force the ball upfield in an attempt to restore parity, only for Spaniard Miguel Llera to head clear compatriot Inigo Calderon's cross. The resulting corner is swung in by Marino David Lopez but the towering Anthony Gardner clears the pressure.

On the 11th minute, Antonio is penalised for handball and Lopez crosses the free-kick for Argentinian Jose Ulloa to shoot and force Chris Kirkland into a good save. The resulting corner by Andrea Orlandi is quickly halted when Adam El-Abd fouls Kirkland. Wednesday relieve the pressure with a corner of their own, defended well from Danny Pugh's set-piece. The Owls fashion a chance on the 17th minute when an Antonio snapshot clears the crossbar before Orlandi sees his corner cleared by Llera at the other end. As Brighton push to equalise another chance goes begging - this time Lopez fires well over leaving the Seagulls frustrated. The first yellow card of the match is shown to Wednesdays David Prutton for fouling Ashley Barnes. Another Brighton corner is awarded when Lewis Buxton clears the ball in by Lopez but again the Owls back line stands firm and the danger is cleared."

    REDA OUT FOR A WHILE

Cult hero and BA Baracus lookalike Reda Johnson is still struggling with his troublesome ankle injury. The news coming out of S6 is that he'll be resting out for at least the next ten days, with a view to being back and available for selection against Palace at the other end of this month.

All the more reason to be thankful for the arrival and excellent form of Danny Pugh - who was absolutely brilliant against Brighton and is sure to continue in the first XI for at least the forseeable future.

    Get well soon Reda!

    SHAMELESS PODCAST PLUG

Not satisfied with having my own weekly email and my own page in the matchday programme, I also get to listen to the sound of my own voice as part of the Wednesday Week podcast, which is your weekly look at everything SWFC-related.

With weekly listeners now approaching the 1000 mark, we're obviously doing something right, although co-host Beastie claims that at least 700 of those are his fan club of adoring teenage girls.

With a light-hearted look at what's going on at S6, presenter Lord Hillsborough is joined by Dan Fudge, Beastie and myself every week - so why not give it a go? Find us on iTunes or alternatively at our website at thewednesdayweek.com!
