Owls Blogger and Sky Sports fan zone SWFC blogger Carl Mullooly returns to Wednesdayite.com with his blog for March and talks about the comings and goings at Hillsborough recently.

"I remember writing a blog just over a year ago, wondering whether Gary Megson was going to be a long term appointment. On Wednesday 29th February 2012 I got my answer. Initially I was shocked, but can’t say I was overly disappointed. I didn’t really want Megson in the first instance, but as with any other manager I supported him, and he did bring lots of qualities to the club. He’s gone out on a high winning the derby and will be fondly remembered by many, and the only other manager in recent history who falls into that bracket is Paul Sturrock…who won a play off final!

I am not somebody who agrees with the current culture in football for sacking managers, but we are where we are. I simply could not understand the anger from some fans, especially against Milan Mandaric. Without that man we probably wouldn’t have a club today. I look at Rangers and Portsmouth and think that could easily have been us. I understand everyone has a right to question a decision, but to be highly critical of a man that has pumped his own money into a club that he had no previous affiliation with is unfair. Yes he may look to make a profit by selling us in the future, but I am certain that we will be in a better state than the mess he rescued us from in December 2010.

In all honesty, I understood the reasons for sacking Megson. I recently commented that since the Huddersfield game in December we hadn’t been playing well, and prior to the derby we lost four on the bounce, including an abject performance against Blackpool in the cup. Yes promotion is our priority, but winning breeds confidence, and it would have been a welcome distraction for the players and fans to head to Goodison Park. To roll over and die in that game was both disappointing and a tad embarrassing. Megson is an Owl granted, but that isn’t always enough to make you a success.

What I was pleased with was that the negativity didn’t last long amongst fans. Dave Jones was appointed shortly after Megson left and he is making all the right noises. We produced our most consistent performance of the season in his first game in charge; beating Bury 4-1. Goals for Madine and Lowe in that could be pivotal if we want to catch our city rivals and try and clinch second spot. They are both goal scorers and if we can get them firing it will be a massive boost. We had a great balance in the game playing two wide men, and Mike Jones had his best game since joining the club, albeit he has had little opportunity since his arrival. Throw Huddersfield and MK Dons into the mix and we are still in for an exciting, if not tense and nervous end to the season.

Time will tell with Dave Jones but he has my backing and all I want is to be playing championship football next season. I also think the Mandaric wants nothing less, and ultimately that is why he changed the manager. It’s on his head, and as he said, it will hit him in the pocket if we don’t go up. If we do go up, we will also owe Gary Megson a debt of gratitude for starting the job. Now we all need to get behind the team and trust in Milan."
