It’s not over yet but it’s a tall order for the owls to finish second. Much as I hope we can finish second, maybe getting any disappointment out of the way now is better, as it’s less than a week between the final league game and the start of the play offs. I think had we’d had Dave Jones in charge for the whole season; we would be in a better position. Megson did a decent job and it’s largely down to him we are where we are today, but the 5 point gap and extra games played seems like it has been too much despite the excellent form under the new manager.
We have played better football recently. The thing I like is that we have played 2 out and out attacking wingers in Jermaine Johnson and Michail Antonio. Megson would often play a central midfielder in the wide role, which strengthens the defence but reduces the attacking options. Loan signing Keith Treacy has shown glimpses of what he can do when he has appeared from the bench, and with a little more match practice, could be a key figure if we enter the League One lottery.
I’ve been slightly disappointed with our other loan player Nile Ranger. He came with a big reputation, but I think he lacks match practice. Again getting games under his belt could help us longer term, and he did seal a great win at Huddersfield after earlier hitting the woodwork. His strike partnership with Gary Madine has the potential to frighten any defence. Madine is showing form he produced earlier in the season prior to injury, and he gives us a very real goal threat which I think will prove crucial in the run in.
Looking at the other play off challengers, my view is the teams to avoid are Carlisle and Stevenage if they make it. Carlisle is always a tough place to go and Premier League Tottenham struggled with their trip to Broadhall Way. At this time I’d back Stevenage to clinch the final play off spot, and with my optimistic hat on, if they could beat Sheffield United in the run in it might give us a glimmer of hope. I don’t buy the theory that it’s the sixth place team with the best chance. It’s all about form, and if we keep our form going to the end of the season and end up in the play offs, I’d be confident that we could win promotion; but anything could happen.
Either way it’s been a memorable season so far, I just hope we can finish it off in a positive way, and the only way that will happen is by securing a place in the Championship next season…time will tell."
