Our regular Owls blogger Joe Crann returns to Wednesdayite.com with his latest blog and attempts a rallying call with the Owls having lost five in a row, hoping to end that run at Wolves on Saturday.  Joe is based in South Africa and is a journalist for Soccer-Laduma, Africa’s biggest football publication.  He's Sheffield born and bred and moved over to Cape Town, South Africa in 2011.

"Well, we’re now 10 games into the season and, in all competitions we’ve conceded 20 goals. Not ideal for a team that, last month, had fans dreaming of a second consecutive promotion.

Now, just a matter of weeks later, we’re sat 21st in the league, out of the Credit Card Cup and without a league win in four games, time to despair? I think not. Time to double up our support? Damn straight…

Already I’ve heard people calling for Dave Jones head. Seriously? The man who helped us steamroll our way into the Championship, the man who, until September 1st, was credited for helping turn Wednesday into Premiership hopefuls.

Really? I mean I know football fans are fickle. I know that, over the years, we’ve seen our fair share of numptys come in through the managerial doors at Hillsborough and leave with their tail between their legs having achieved sweet FA. However, we’ve finally got something going for us. Why throw away the first bit of stability that we’ve had in a long time because of a bit of a barren spell.

Am I saying that DJ is without blame? Of course not. From my perspective, granted it is coming from a distant land far from Sheffield, Jones looks to be forcing ‘his boys’ into the squad and disregarding some of the guys who helped us get to where we are in the first place. Don’t get me wrong, there has been some phenomenal quality brought into S6 since Jones took over, however, that doesn’t mean that the boys who worked their arses off for us last year should be thrown completely to the wayside.

Now people are starting to slate our defence. Why now? We’ve only kept one clean sheet this year, oddly against Premiership opposition Fulham, and have been leaking goals for fun so far. The problem is that now our ‘We’ll score more than you’ tactic is faltering because we’re erm, not scoring.

Anyway, like I’ve said many a time, we’re new to this league, we knew we were going to have to deal with a defeat, or five, and to be honest I think that our shock start only led to the SWFC bubble growing to such an extent that when it popped, some of the fair weather fans started to panic.

I can only speak for myself, I can’t speak for the thousands of other Wednesdayites around the globe, but I for one aren’t being disheartened by the bad run. Yes, I bloody hate losing. I hate having the face on for an hour or so after turning off Wednesday Player and skulking back to my apartment, but I’m not going to turn against the boys.

No one really expected us to get anything against Southampton, but nearly 700 Wednesdayites made the trip down south on a crappy Tuesday night to cheer on the blue and white wizards. No doubt they will have come away disappointed, but there were also some positives to take out of a game in which were undone by a £7 million striker.

Up next we’re facing a Wolves side that could be punch drunk following a 6-0 battering at the hands of Chelsea, before travelling to Burnley a few days later. It’s a busy schedule, but I think we just need the one win and we’ll be on our way.

October 19th sees dirty Leeds make the short trip to Hillsborough for the first time since August 2006. They won that game thanks to a penalty from David Healy, and nothing would make me happier than to give them a spanking this time around. If only to wipe the smug little grin off Neil Warnock’s face that is bound to still be there following their win over Everton.

Look, we have some genuine quality in our side, we also have some people that aren’t really pulling their weight at the minute, but we’ve got to keep the faith and keep supporting the boys. Yes, our defence has become more leaky than an old man’s bladder, yes, we’re no longer grasping victory from the jaws of defeat, but we’ve got to look on the bright side… we’re not Peterborough.

    Can we kick it? @YesWeCrann
