Programme Notes v Notts County 12/8/2014

On behalf of everyone at Wednesdayite let me welcome both sets of fans to Hillsborough for the first competitive game of the season. This really is a clash of the "golden oldies"; Notts County are renowned for holding the prestigious title of being the oldest football team in the world to currently play at a professional level. "The magpies" were formed on 28th November 1862, whilst the fourth oldest league club, SWFC, were formed on September 4th 1867. Of course the cricket arm of our sporting club was formed much earlier in 1820.

Anyway let's hope for an exciting, competitive game. A result similar to our meeting 4 years ago in the first round of the Football League Trophy would suit me; The Owls won 2-1 at Hillsborough, courtesy of 2 first half goals by James O'Connor.
Probably the greatest and most famous player to play for both Clubs was Jackie Sewell. The former England international broke the English transfer record when he signed for Wednesday from County for £34,500 in March, 1951. Jackie was a prolific goalscorer for both Clubs, scoring 97 goals in 178 league games for County and scoring an equally impressive 92 goals in 175 games for "The Owls".
The second away trip of the season is a journey north to Middlesbrough, where last August a goal in the 35th minute from Antonio saw us take a lead into the half time break, Boro equalised shortly after the break and the points were shared. Lets hope we can go one better and bring all three points back down the A1.

A host of players left the Club for pastures new in the Summer and of course several new players have joined our ranks. We thank those who departed for their contribution over recent years and of course wish the new arrivals the very best of fortune.
It has also been a time for change at Wednesdayite. We will be holding a members' meeting after the Forest game on August 30th to explain these changes. Members will be receiving details of this meeting in the next day or so.
    Enjoy the game this evening,
    Up the Owls, WAWAW
