    Programme Notes v Millwall 19/8/2014

This evening Wednesdayite welcome the supporters of "The Lions", Millwall F.C. We both picked up maximum points on the opening day of the season and it was great to see one of our former players who came through the ranks at Hillsborough, Mark Beevers, getting on the scoresheet. Mark was an important member of the team that gained promotion back to the Championship in 2012 and we wish him well. His father regularly used the Wednesdayite coach for travelling to away games and Mark played a total of 171 games for "The Owls", scoring 5 goals. Wednesdayite are delighted to see one of our former youth team players become an established Championship defender, albeit at another Club.

    MEMORABLE MATCHES

We have had many memorable matches over the years. Who can ever forget us winning a corner deep into injury time at the Den in the latter part of the 2012-13 season. As the corner came in, Chris Maguire met it at the near post with a wonderful clipped volley into the far corner. The scenes of jubilation were something to behold.
But my most memorable match involving "The Lions" took place on April 1st, 1989. At the time Big Ron Atkinson had been in charge for only a few weeks and we were still in grave danger of relegation. Millwall were comfortable in mid-table and boasted the prolific strike force of Teddy Sheringham and Tony Cascarino. However on the day Wednesday were the dominant force; we were 1-0 up at half-time through the recently arrived Carlton Palmer who had a magnificent game as did his midfield partner, young Dean Barrick, who was making his home debut. In the second half we ran out comfortable winners in the end with 2 goals by another new arrival, Steve Whitton. You could feel the jubilation and sheer relief amongst our fans when Steve Whitton ran through to slot the ball home in front of the Kop and make the game safe at 3-0.

    TIM CAHILL

I must give a special mention to Tim Cahill who has been a magnificent player throughout his career. For a midfield player he has been a prolific goalscorer and certainly scored one of the great World Cup goals for Australia in the 2014 tournament. Tim of course started his senior career at Millwall, where he scored more than 50 goals and was instrumental in the club reaching the 2004 F.A. Cup Final.
