This afternoon we extend a big welcome to the fans of Reading F.C. Last season we recorded our first league win of the season when we beat them 5-2 at Hillsborough in early November. Let's hope we break our home league duck of the season today by again beating "The Royals" who we did the double over last season.
MEMORABLE MATCHES
Three matches stick in my mind against today's opponents.
1. The 5-2 home success last season.
2. The 3rd round F.A. Cup tie against Reading away in 1966. Fantham gave us a half time lead and second half goals from Fantham again and Jim McCalliog secured a 3-2 success on the road to Wembley.
3. Although we finished 22nd and were relegated to League One in 2003, our match against Reading on January 11th. arguably produced the highlight of the season. We were 2-0 down at H/T and then 3 second half goals in front of the Kop by Alan Quinn, Gerald Sibon and Allan Johnston sealed a famous comeback and victory.
THE WEDNESDAY CRICKET CLUB (TWCC)
Massive congratulations are in order to TWCC. They were at Dronfield (Sun 7th Sept) needing just 6 points to secure the championship of the Mansfield and District Sunday League section 6. This would be their 2nd Championship and 3rd promotion since their re-emergence 4 years ago.
TWCC were put in to bat and were in deep trouble at just 21 for 3 off 10 overs. However a remarkable 4th wicket partnership of 221 between Craig Turner and Nick Penfold transformed the situation and we were able to declare on 251 for 4.
The Wednesday then set about taking 9 of the Dronfield wickets conceding 180 runs and the winning draw was enough to secure the championship.
TWCC extend their thanks and gratitude to Wednesdayite who have secured successive kit deals and this year provided a set of wicket covers.
