Wednesdayite have a page in the official match day programme and you can read our column there first.

Peter Shaw is the author of these notes and his latest column from the home game V Ipswaich  is published below:-

This evening we welcome fans of "The Tractor Boys" from Suffolk to Hillsborough. They really are a team which seems to have similar strengths to our own; both Clubs have an excellent manager/coach and are hard working, resolute and disciplined where the team ethic is more important than the individual. I am sure both teams will surprise a lot of the "more fancied" teams this season and we wish their supporters well for a successful season but a disappointing evening tonight! I expect a very close and fiercely contested contest.

A PROUD HISTORY

Ipswich Town were taken from the third tier of English football to the top league in 4 seasons under Alf Ramsey. In their first ever season in the top flight they won their only League Title in 1962. Unfortunately Alf was to leave to take over England in April, 1963 and the rest is history. They then suffered fluctuating fortunes until 1969 when Bobby Robson became manager. And what a team he built! They "thrashed" Arsenal 1-0 in the 1978 FA Cup Final; although a Roger Osborne goal was the only goal to separate the sides, the match was totally one sided and Ipswich hit the woodwork on 3 occasions. They were challenging on all fronts in the early 80s and were unfortunate not to win the League although they did win the UEFA Cup in 1982. After this of course Bobby Robson also departed to manage England but to this day Ipswich hold the distinction of never having lost a European tie at home; it should be noted that they have beaten many top European sides on the way too including Real Madrid, Barcelona and the Milan clubs.

 MEMORABLE MATCH

A previous encounter which really sticks in my mind took place in mid-December, 1990. We were 3rd in the table and pushing for an instant return to the top flight but unfortunately we found ourselves 2-0 down in the first half. Big Ron Atkinson took immediate action by sacrificing a full-back (Phil King) and bringing on 36 year old Trevor Francis. Tricky Trev scored a fantastic goal to reduce the deficit before half -time and Captain Fantastic, Nigel Pearson, levelled the match in the second half. The match finished 2-2 and a former loyal servant of Ipswich, Steve McCall, was an unused substitute for Wednesday on that day.

 AWAY COACH TO LEEDS UNITED
Our fifth away game in 22 days  takes us the short journey up the M1 to Elland Road.  The last time we met was in January when we recorded that incredible 6-0 victory, Leeds will be seeking revenge for that game and all SWFC fans, Stuart Gray and the team will be hoping for a repeat performance. As has become common for this away fixture, it is another lunchtime kick off with the game being live on Sky Sports.
