Peter Shaw is the author of these notes and his latest column from the home game V Wigan is published below:-

This afternoon we welcome the supporters of Wigan Athletic to Hillsborough. A week might be a long time in politics but in football 18 months is an eternity. It was only May last year that "The Latics", as a Premiership team, beat super rich Manchester City at Wembley and lifted the FA Cup for the first time, completing a modern day fairy tale. Since that triumph Wigan suffered the  ignominy of relegation to the Championship, the first Club to suffer this fate and win the FA Cup in the same season. They came close to returning to Wembley this year to defend their title but were beaten in a penalty shootout against Arsenal in a memorable semi-final.

The manager of the Development Squad at Wigan is none other than Peter Atherton who was almost an ever present in "The Owls" defence between 1994 and 2000, playing well over 200 games for us. His volleyed goal for us against Aston Villa, 20 years ago almost to the day was a particularly memorable moment for the fans who witnessed it. After former player Dalian Atkinson had given Villa a H/T lead with a volley from close range, Atherton thundered home a sensational equaliser with his right foot from 25 yards when Villa goalkeeper Mark Bosnich cleared the ball straight to him.

    3pm, Saturday December 6th, 2014

The match at Ewood Park will be our 145th meeting with Blackburn Rovers, with us having 54 wins, Blackburn 53 wins and 37 draws.

Last seasons visit on Boxing day saw us come away with a point following a 0-0 draw,  This time let's hope we take all three points.
