Peter Shaw is the author of these notes and his latest column from the home game V Brighton is published below:-

This afternoon we welcome the supporters of Brighton and Hove Albion to Hillsborough. It has been a difficult season for The Seagulls in some respects. They started off on a bad footing when we beat them at the Falmer Stadium on the opening fixture of the season. That was Sami Hyypia's first game in charge and was a sign of things to come. Brighton hovered around the bottom 3 during the opening months of the season and just before Christmas, Sami tendered his resignation. Chris Hughton assumed the reins on 31st December and has had some notable victories already. Let's hope any revival is arrested temporarily this afternoon!

Big Jack Charlton was a great manager for SWFC. I loved the guy but to this day I think his biggest mistake as manager was not playing Charlie Williamson at left back in the 1983 F.A.Cup semi-final against Brighton at Highbury. Just before the semi-final, our regular left back, Ian Bailey, broke his leg in a 2-0 win at Bolton the previous Saturday. We had trained all week with our cover left back and natural replacement, Charlie Williamson, deputising. For some reason Big Jack decided to take Pat Heard out from the left side of our midfield and replace him with Ante Mirocevic who had been out of the team since January. Pat Heard was played at left full back, which disrupted both our defence and midfield. The rest is history as they say! It is interesting though that Charlie Williamson played every game for the rest of the season and I cannot remember Mirocevic ever playing for the Club again. I still believe we could have been walking down Wembley Way to face Manchester United in the Final if Charlie Williamson had played at Highbury and Pat Heard had been left in midfield. We will never know for sure but it was so frustrating to get so close and miss out.
