Wednesdayite continue to run a coaching scheme for primary schools in the area, which is aimed at encouraging a healthy lifestyle and an interest in football, whilst at the same time promoting the name of Sheffield Wednesday in the schools and local community.
It is hoped that we generate a favourable impression of the club and help create fans of the future. By emphasising the fun and enjoyment we hope the scheme helps encourage the youngsters to be involved in grass-roots football.
The success of the Wednesdayite Primary Schools Coaching Scheme has been recognised over the last few years by the Co-Operative Group, United Region. The group has provided us with generous grant funding to support the scheme.
Ex-player and former SWFC Commumity Officer Steve Adams operates the scheme on behalf of Wednesdayite. During school term-time, Steve runs the full day coaching events at two schools, involving over 400 local primary school children each week. Well over 10,000 children have now taken part in the coaching scheme since it's inception.
The feedback we have received from schools have been very positive, with many requests for repeat sessions. The scheme is as inclusive as possible, aimed equally at boys and girls and concentrates on participation and fun. Youngsters are encouraged to think about how they can develop a healthy lifestyle.
Wednesdayite are pleased and proud to be able to offer such a popular and valuabl programme to local schools, in curriculum time and completely free to the participating schools. We are grateful for the support we have received fromt he Co-Operative Group for their efforts in helping us develop what has become a successful partnership.
We are also grateful for the services of Steve Adams. His enthusiasm for the scheme and the fun approach he has adopted has produced a positive impact amongst our local primary school children. Steve also assisted in running Wednesdayite coaching sessions at the 2009 Grass Roots Football Event at the Birmingham NEC, which helped spread the Sheffield Wednesday brand and our coaching messages to a much wider audience.
