OWLS 2-1 WATFORD - SKIN OF THE TEETH
The pressure of a relegation dogfight is beginning to show, as misplaced passes, hoofed clearances and being frightened to shoot became too common against a very poor Watford team.
The only thing stopping the first half from being totally forgettable was Potter’s free kick hitting the post. Neither team looked like they thought they could win in, with Watford keeping the ball better only because we seemed to have an inability to pass to a team mate, with Tommy Spurr being a particular culprit with two passes to the opposition which would have given better teams a chance.
But at last we have a manager who can make a difference at half time, and send out a positive team rather than one that looks likely to concede in the first five minutes.
A strong ten minutes of pressure showed what Wednesday can do when they press the opposition, pass to each other and run with the ball. With Watford offering nothing, it looked like only a matter of time before we got a goal.
But of course, on our present run, we still couldn’t work any good chances, and the game began to drift a little. Before up stepped Jermaine Johnson – sorry Eddie Nolan. But it would be easy to make the mistake the way Eddie ran with the ball, before slotting a super shot into the bottom corner.
Nerves began to fray again after, following what counted as Watford pressure, a free kick on the edge of the area (from our position, not even sure what it was for) led to an equaliser. At least this led to the crowd raising its voice again, and the team pushing forward.
What looked like a draw, with Jeffers being thrown on with a whole five minutes left to change the game, became a great night as Varney ran with purpose at the defence, and put in a winner off the post.
Watford couldn’t raise their game to equalise again, and Wednesday ran out with a vital three points.
It’s still far too early to be sure that we are ‘Staying in this division’ as some fans were chanting after our first goal, but we’re giving ourselves a fighting chance.
Matthew.
