OWLS STOPPED IN THEIR TRACKS BY MAC ATTACK
“What’s there to worry about?”, “We’ll walk this division” and “Promotion, here we come”
Those are just some of the lines you may have heard on the coach to Brentford, or in the pubs in Sheffield ahead of this game. However, the Owls were brought back down to earth after a spot of stage fright occurred in front of the TV cameras in this David and Goliath clash.
There couldn’t have been a bigger gulf before kick-off. The host’s rock bottom without a league win, and Wednesday top of the tier, unbeaten. However, like in so many of these games, David, it would seem did not read the Sky Sports script.
In a largely disappointing and dull first 45 minutes, Wednesday failed to settle or create any real chances, with Neil Mellor and Gary Teale both creating half-chances at best.
The hosts though looked more of a threat with Myles Weston causing Lewis Buxton a few headaches and then Robbie Simpson creating the first notable effort of the first period when his header failed to trouble Nicky Weaver.
Brentford’s momentum built for some time, before the only goal came just before the break. 29-year old journeyman Charlie MacDonald, now at his tenth club, controlled an inswinging cross well before setting himself up a for a left-footed drive that was well past a helpless Weaver.
Despite the threat of a first defeat of the season, the Owls never got going and even after a rollicking from Irvine at half-time, Wednesday failed to produce any glimmer of the performance that they showed in the JP trophy tie on the previous Wednesday.
As the half grew, the Bees never looked like relinquishing their stranglehold on the points, as Robbie Simpson smacked the bar with a back-to-goal effort before Weaver had to produce a stunning save to deny substitute Nicky Adams.
The hosts eventually hung on to record that first league win of the campaign, while the Owls head back to Yorkshire licking their wounds and pondering what went wrong.
Despite the defeat the Owls are still a point clear of the chasing pack, and with an upcoming Hillsborough clash against second placed Carlisle this Saturday, it is likely to be the perfect tonic to what has been a forgettable weekend.
Who knows, a victory in that match and Owls fans may be purring about the “P” word once more.
