Sheffield Wednesday defender Richard Wood has refuted rumours that he has submitted a transfer request.

Rumours began circulating this morning that the Sheffield Wednesday player wanted away from Hillsborough, however those claims have been dismissed by both Sheffield Wednesday and Wood himself.

It has been speculated the rumour may have been picked up from an old article that was published last year and was spread by eager fans who are keen to hear whether the player will be extending his contract.

Sheffield Wednesday today confirmed the players' contract negotiations, along with that of fellow defender Tommy Spurr, have been deferred until later in the year.

Unfortunately it appears some news outlets, including the BBC News website and Ceefax, have been forwarded the rumour and published it on their services.

In a statement released this afternoon, Wood was said to be 'distressed' by the rumour circulating, saying “This transfer request rumour is completely untrue and I would like to stress that I am happy with my situation at Sheffield Wednesday.

“Myself and the manager have a good understanding, I’m happy here and there is absolutely no truth whatsoever in this news.”

Sheffield Wednesday added "[we] categorically deny a media story run on Friday July 24 claiming that defender, Richard Wood, has handed in a transfer request.

"Sheffield Wednesday would also like to express their extreme disappointment towards the media outlet responsible for what is a completely fabricated story.

"The 24-year-old remains an integral part of Brian Laws’ plans for the 2009/10 Championship season, as was stated earlier today by the manager himself."
