Paul played for The Owls in the 80's alongside his brother, Peter, before moving to Frickley Athletic and then Boston United for a then club-record fee of £12,500 in 1988, where he was voted the teams' player of the year in the 88/89 season. He also had experience playing for Northampton Town and Dagenham and Redbridge.

Paul was my dearest brother, who will be sadly missed forever. We will all never forget him, his courage, his kindness, personality, everything. We are hurting deeply, at last he is at peace. Forever in our hearts. Sue, Ian, Luke & Becky XXXXX
our dearest friend Paul will be sadly missed by all of our family. He has been our friend for many years. He battled bravely during his time of illness and we will always remember his sharp wit and his loving personality. Never forget - Joe Joanne Levi and Jessie xxxx
I came late to watch my beloved Wednesday, when they played and beat (Sheffield) United in the winter of 1980. I brought my son, then 9, as he wanted us to support Wednesday, Peter and Paul Shirtliff didn't play in that first game we saw, but they were in later line-ups, with Mellor, McCulloch, Bolder, Sterland, King, Mirocevic and other good men. Sincere regrets to his family. His name means Wednesday to us. RIP Paul.
So Glad to have had the pleasure of your friendship for so many years. A BIG Thank you for agreeing to be our sons Godfather. Sleep tight, will never forget you. Free from pain.
Our love to Jayne, Danielle Jamie, and all Pauls family.
With regards and our deepest sympathy

As a South Yorkshire football fan, I'm shocked and saddened by this terrible news. I'm sure I speak for all Barnsley fans when I send my deepest concolences to all Paul's friends and family, especially to his brother Peter who played in the greatest Barnsley side ever to grace Oakwell. RIP Paul, 46 is no age at all.

Very sad news.Paul was a good freind during his aprentice days and was very honest with a great sense of humour.
I am sure if he had been a few inches taller he would have had a great career as a proffesional as he had everything else.
Had some great games against him when he played for Hoyland School.
RIP Paul
Noel & Christine - feel great sadness at Peters loss of his brother Paul- we did not know Paul but we do know how much Peter will miss him - Peter has been a good friend and neighbour for many years - We offer our sincere condolences to all of the family at this sad time.
Old school friend and neighbour who moved to Newcastle in early 80's. Last saw Paul at school re-union in Hoyland in '96 and spent a long time catching up. Paul seemed really happy and content with how life was turning out..very proud of his family and still football-mad. Am very sad to hear this news and send my sincere condolences to all Paul's family. I remember him as an intelligent, witty 15 year old whom everyone liked.
shirty im so sad i lost touch with u and only spoke to u in the last few months.even then u were more interested in how i was than talkin about ur battle which u eventualy lost.il never forget the times i played against u and u had me in ur pocket or the times i was lucky enough to play in the same team.il treasure the time i spent with u travelling to games and the laughs in the dressing room.if there is a football team upstairs ul already be captaining it and getting forward from right back.thanks for the memories and what memories i have of u pal.see u at the far post.ado
I played and roomed with Paul at Dagenham and Redbridge and England semi-pro side. What a great footballer and friend he was to me. The laughs we shared down in London will stay with me forever. My thoughts at this time are with his family and friends. Rest in peace Shirty from Paul Cavell.
