Irvine & Coke AwardsCUP FINAL 91

Ask any Owls fan between the ages of 30 and 90 what the best day of their Wednesday-supporting life was, and chances are they'll point to the 21st April 1991. Watching what would become the best Wednesday team in a generation best the mighty Manchester United despite being a 'lowly' Second Division side, in the midst of a sea of blue and white, capped off with that wonderful 'dink', as John Sheridan's shot hit Les Sealey's post and went in...well, it's the stuff dreams are made of, isn't it?

That League Cup triumph remains the last time a team from outside the top flight won a major trophy, and heralded an all-too-brief period where Wednesday were legitimately one of the best teams in the land, packed with international stars and being spoken of as title contenders. And it all started with the team assembled by Big Ron to get us back into the First Division after the heartbreaking relegation of the 1989/90 season.

From back to front, Ron's team had brilliance written through it. Every player in that squad played their part of course, but from inspirational captain Nigel Pearson to the unparalleled class of Roland Nilsson...to the workrate of John Harkes and Danny Wilson...to the sublime vision of John Sheridan...and to the raw pace, power and blistering shot of David Hirst - well, we Wednesday fans were blessed to see them at their very best in the blue and white stripes.

And so, twenty years on we await that next trophy that seemed inevitable in the early Nineties and couldn't seem further away here in 2011. But just as those who followed the Owls through the dark days of the Seventies knew that we'd be back one day, so the Wednesdayites of today need to keep the faith and know - beyond a shadow of a doubt - that we'll make it back there. For now, there are the wonderful memories of that team and all they achieved. In the words of the song...

John Sheri, different class,
Big Carlton covers every blade of grass,
Now we got Hirsty, Willo too,
Trevor Francis looking good as new,
Two Nigels, hard as nails,
We know Shirty never never fails,
So come on Kingy, do your thingy,
Get steaming up and down that wing.
