Review 2010-11In the third part of the review Ricky takes us through December 2010 and January & February 2011.
DECEMBER
League Record – Played 3 – 3 PTS
December was to be the month that Wednesday’s off-the-field problems came to an end. Milan Mandaric finally confirmed his purchase of the club and with it brought new optimism.
A reduced fixture list in the month of December was caused by the hazardous winter experienced across the country. As a result the Owls played just three games, starting with a 2-1 reversal at Swindon Town. Ex-Owl JP McGovern got the winner for the home side in what was to be a rare win for the hosts, as their season eventually petered out into relegation.
A 6-2 thrashing of Bristol Rovers soon followed at Hillsborough, before the Owls form fluctuated once more with a disastrous 5-1 loss at Exeter. Those two results would ultimately sum up the Owls season; one week able to score goals at will, and the next conceding a bucketful.
JANUARY
League Record – Played 4 – 2 PTS
2011 started badly for Wednesday with a 1-0 defeat at Huddersfield meaning the West Yorkshire side completed a league double over Wednesday.
A 2-2 draw at home to Charlton Athletic was followed later in the month by a candidate for the worst performance of the season, when Wednesday were hammered 4-0 away at Leyton Orient.
The draw with Yeovil (2-2) at Hillsborough did little to lift the New Year blues at S6 as the Owls slipped further down the league standings as February came into view.
FEBRUARY
League Record – Played 6 – 5 PTS
The month of February started in horrific fashion for Wednesday with a 5-3 pummelling at Peterborough. The Posh came from behind three times to stun the Owls in what was to prove to be Alan Irvine’s last game at the helm.
Gary Megson was brought in by chairman Milan Mandaric in a matter of days, and he presided over the following game: a 2-2 draw at home to MK Dons before a staggering run of four consecutive away games followed.
In that quartet of matches, Wednesday fell to poor defeats at Rochdale (1-2) and Tranmere (0-3), before salvaging a credible goalless draw at promotion-chasing Bournemouth.
In their last game of the month, Wednesday finally found their first league win of 2011 with a 1-0 win at Carlisle, thanks to Tommy Miller’s strike.
The final instalment for March, April & May 2011 coming your way next...
