It’s now only one week to go until Hirsty & Friends set off on the mammoth task of cycling 150 miles Coast to Coast all in the name of charity.

For those of you who haven’t heard about the bike ride, ex-Sheffield Wednesday legends David Hirst and Phil King along with former Newcastle United star John Beresford will be putting their pedal power to the test when they join members of Wednesdayite for the charity event.

The group of cyclists, which includes Wednesdayite directors Peter Shaw and Dave Barlow, together with volunteers Nigel Short, Julian Batty and Paul Freer, will be riding across the breadth of England from Grange-over-Sands in Cumbria, to Filey on the Yorkshire coast.

The challenge will take place over three days between Tuesday 22nd and Thursday 24th September 2009 and will raise funds for Sheffield Wednesday Football Club’s chosen charities – the Sheffield Wednesday Community Programme Charity and The Children’s Hospital Charity.

The team are raising funds to help purchase a minibus on behalf of the Sheffield Wednesday Community Programme Charity. The bus will be used to transport Sheffield Wednesday's disabled and special needs supporters to home and away games. Additionally, a proportion of funds raised will be donated to The Children's Hospital, Sheffield, to help fund specialist medical equipment.

The fund raising started on Saturday at the Sheffield Wednesday v Nottingham Forest game and we raised the substantial amount of £1,239.89 through a bucket collection. Wednesdayite thank everybody who contributed and our appreciation goes out to the volunteers who helped with the bucket collection.

To carry the fund raising effort on over the next week in the run up to the off, Wednesdayite directors Peter Shaw, Jim Bainbridge, Dave Barlow and Richard Davies, who are all taking part either as a cyclist or part of the back up team, will all be taking it in turns to post a blog each day on the Wednesdayite website, www.wednesdayite.com.

They will be talking about their individual preparations, how the bike ride is shaping up along with daily news about sponsorship, details of the auction winners who will be joining the ride and any other developments as and when they happen.

The Director’s blogs will be posted all the way up until the 21st September and from then on Wednesdayite member and volunteer Nigel Short, who is cycling the 150 miles, will be taking over the reigns and posting about his build up and telling all about his trials and tribulations throughout the gruelling ride all the way through until the riders arrival in Filey on 24th September.

So to keep abreast with all things Coast 2 Coast don’t forget to keep coming back to www.wednesdayite.com and you can still donate to the charities by visiting by clicking here.
