Further statement from David Blunkett - dated 8th September 2010.  "Blunkett issues further statement on Sheffield Wednesday"

Rt Hon David Blunkett, MP for Sheffield Brightside and Hillsborough, has issued a short supplementary statement following developments at Sheffield Wednesday FC.

Mr Blunkett said: “I have great confidence in club chairman Howard Wilkinson and believe that we should get behind him in sorting out workable and transparent arrangements with the bank; clarity as to the true financial position and historic and recent responsibility; and a clear way forward for investors prepared to work with the fans and put the interests of the club first.

“Strengthening Howard Wilkinson’s hand in working with Nick Parker and the long-suffering staff of Sheffield Wednesday has to be the immediate priority.

“I personally hope that he will be able to get the backing to immediately strengthen the board in moving forward with negotiations with potential investors as quickly as possible.”

thank you mr blunket for all your hard work behind the scenes and that it won't belong before we can get the financial help we need to take the club forward.

Howard and Nick, fair play, they are doing their best. The rest of them are just bleeding the club dry. They should never walk the streets of sheffield 6 again. Sack the board.

I'm totally fed up and disgusted with the goings on at SWFC.Forget the past the most important thing now is how to address the immediate problems. We have to proactively pursue investment and must not be blinkered to what might be on offer. We need to fully support Howard & Nick as these two demonstrate real passion towards SWFC. It's a pity no-one else appears to follow suit.

As a fan of 63 years i am gutted at the prospectof the club going bankrupt Sheffield wednesday is my .
I have allways said ask the fans for help, have a bucket collect{if that is possible}.with 20,000 fans going to the home matches, and we did one every home game,i am sure the fans would love to help they only need to be asked.
Choose who is to blame for all this, THE CLUB IS THE MOST IMPORTANT HERE suely.

Dear Mr Gath, I recently read your letter dated 04th September 2010 which was addressed to Howard Wilkinson. You rightly raised various concerns as to the current precarious financial position our club finds it’s self and for that you must be congratulated for taking the time to put these points across to the chairman. However what I fail to understand is why you failed to raise these concerns many months ago when it became clear that the club was spending millions of pounds it did not have? The warning signs were there early last season when the club failed to achieve it’s season ticket target by several thousand, despite this the club still increased the wage bill by a reported 1.5 million, why were you not showing any concerns then? On Saturday 22nd August 2009 Lee Strafford took to the airwaves after the great 4-0 win over Sc**thorpe to criticise supporters for not turning up in big enough numbers as this was 4,000 down on the clubs projected average match day attendance. Again did it not concern you as to why the chairman was so desperate to get the message across that the club had to meet these targets?, these were clear alarm bells but you passed them off as false alarms. Throughout 2009 Sheffield Wednesday continually spent vast sums of money despite being well short of hitting business plan targets, for example in July 2009 you were given an exclusive briefing into Sheffield Wednesday’s stadium upgrade plans by John Rutherford, Hillsborough’s Stadium Operations Manager, the following is taken from the wednesdayite website “Interestingly, a bullet-point included in the presentation read: “Investment Imminent – £20million” and John Rutherford laboured this point, but without going into specifics. This led some supporters present to believe that Sheffield Wednesday are indeed close to securing funds to help both with the stadium plans and with additional funds for the squad. The first phase of developments is planned to begin in November, suggesting any such investment really could be imminent.” Why did you fail to question why a club in our financial position was spending hundreds of thousands of pounds on stadium design and planning applications knowing full well that the club did not have the money for this never mind to actually start work on the improvements in the November of 2009. Why did you not question where the money was coming from to pay for the design and planning stage? Why did you not question how this project would be funded should investment not be forthcoming? In January 2010 the club could not afford to bring in any players of real quality despite the need for a least one quality striker in order to get away from the relegation zone. Despite being told that over 1.3 million had already been contributed to the player budget for the following season, did it not concern you that the club did not use 2-300K in order to assist Alan Irvine in his efforts to avoid relegation? I accept that even with two additional strikers there were no guarantees that we would have remained in the championship but why did you not question the decision by the club to go into the final three months of the season with what we had when the same group of players had been looking relegation fodder most of the season? Throughout Lee Strafford’s time in charge of our club he told fans on numerous occasions that investment was imminent, weeks away, he told one group from an internet message board that he could actually smell the money wafting into the corridors of Hillsborough stadium.. Did it not concern you in January that cub 9 sports were leading the club and its shareholders even further down the garden path than I can’t afford to pay for my TV Ariel Geoffrey Sheard? During the past 18-20 months the warning signs were there, but you said nothing, the club increased outgoings but was not meeting its business plan targets to pay for the increase, you didn’t bat an eye lid. Investment deadlines came and went, again no comment, air raid sirens were banging out in January 2010 but you said nothing, relegation to the third division was not even enough to bring you off the fence on which you had been perched. You failed to ask one question of the chairman who was in full control of the club for 20 months, his actions and his failures are why we are now on the brink of administration, why did you fail to raise any concerns to Lee Strafford? Instead going for Howard Wilkinson who is now left an impossible task. Lee Strafford was your man and you went along with his spin and hype and therefore are also responsible for the mess we now find our club in, you and your board of directors should resign in shame.
