A New Wednesdayite

At the Wednesdayite AGM in July one of the items on the agenda was the future of the Society. To this end, incoming Vice-Chair Eddie Hoyland made a presentation to those present - which we are now making available for all Owls fans to view and discuss.
The intention of making the presentation public now, following not only presenting it to key figures within the club but also to the leaders of our fellow SWFC supporters groups, is to kick off discussion as to what the members of Wednesdayite and the wider fanbase want and need from a supporters' organisation as Wednesday experience something of a rebirth following the troubles of the last decade.
We hope that you find the presentation thought-provoking and inspiring - and we call on Wednesday fans from all areas and with all interests and skills to think whether there is something that they can bring to help us achieve this vision - of doing our part to put Wednesday back on the top of the footballing world where it belongs. We are keen to find new faces with new ideas - so if you see something that makes you think "that could be something I could help with", or if you've got a passion that you can bring to the table that we haven't thought of, then we're all ears. Ideally we'd like to see fresh faces and new blood right through the organisation - from the Wednesdayite Board, to matchday volunteers, through every part of who we are and what we do.
Wednesdayite may not be everybody's idea of the perfect fans' organisation. But I'm sure that most fans agree that a supporters' club is needed, and I believe that most fans would welcome the benefits of all kinds that a strong, popular and unified fanbase can bring. This isn't about politics - it's about making it better to be a Wednesday fan for everybody connected with SWFC.

Although we as a group have always done our utmost to help and support "WEDNESDAYITE" it has always been thought that the name in some way stole the identity of all Owls fans who historicaly are known as Wednesdayites. As a long term member i felt robbed by the society taking this name away from all owls fans and feel that only good can come out of a name change which would then 'give back' Wednesdayite to all wednesdayites
This is exactly what I'm talking about when I say that perhaps a name change would be for the best. My view is that the Wednesdayite branding (the logo etc) is really, really strong - I would like to keep as much of it as possible, because we really don't have anything to be 'ashamed' of. But changing the name could usher in a whole new era and show the doubters that there is more to the Society than just politics.
A really interesting and well thought out presentation. In my opinion central to this is the club's approval to whatever form the new 'wednesdayite' takes. Perhaps the society needs to be more closely linked with the clubs membership scheme and become the 'official' supporters club.
alternatively it could be argued that the society should always be independent of the club but how much of this vision can be achieved from the outside I am not sure.
I think the name does need to be changed to what would depend on how close the link was to the club.
Whichever way I wish you success UTO
Eddie good ideas in the slides, as a parent of young children childcare facilities would be a massive support on matchdays, and if it gets more money through the door whilst providing an opportunity to brainwashed them win-win.
The bolt ons are another great idea too, how its implemented is another matter via the season ticket card I presume.
Your final sentence hit the nail on the head. Most fans now realise that those at the core of Wednesdayite had their own political agenda and wanted control for themselves and helped push the club to the brink.
Thus not just new name is required, the rancour caused divisons and problems which will take years to heel. Dismantle the structure is the only way.
This presentation gives me the feel that some one is trying to establish a rival organisation to SWFC not a complimentary one which will divert money away from the club. Looks as though some one is trying to create a job for themselves, with money scarce Wednesday can ill af ford this. Sorry can not be more positive.
Well said James Green. All the ideas in the presentation are great but they are all ideas that should be passed to swfc, vounteers should be passed to swfc as well to help, not a seperate organisation as I can see this being more of a financial hinderance to the club, not a help, especially when it really takes off and someone is lining there pockets from it.
James, I would take issue with the idea that Wednesdayite EVER wanted 'control for themselves'. This line was trotted out throughout the last decade by those who for whatever reason did not want to engage with fans' groups - and was conclusively proven to be untrue when Wednesdayite voted to release their shares on TWO separate occasions. I would say that most fans see that Wednesdayite only ever wanted the best for the club and its fans - and that mission continues now the political sideshow has thankfully left town.
WednesdayBoy, I take your point that in an ideal world the club would run all operations and put their full weight behind them. Unfortunately SWFC simply don't have the time and numbers to do such a thing, and are happy to partner with volunteer organisations like Wednesdayite to achieve things that they could not do on their own. As far as 'lining pockets' is concerned, everything that Wednesdayite do is a) transparent (our accounts are published) and b) legally obliged to be for the benefit of the community. No Wednesdayite director or member has ever taken a penny from the operations of the society, and never will do. In fact, our remit is to drive revenue FOR the club wherever possible rather than handle it ourselves.
It just goes to show though that the misinformation of the past is still stuck in the minds of some fans - hence why we need to reinvent ourselves and show clearly that we have an open, positive and constructive platform on which to bring benefit to all.
The first step is a rebrand; a new name that reflects it's inclusivity for all Sheffield Wednesday supporters. The member numbers of Wednesdayite reflect the mistrust the average supporter had of the organisation and new start is definitely needed.
I don't want to name names, but I think previous big players at Wednesdayite were using it for their own means and caused hostility towards it. Yes, anyone could join and have their say and even nominate themselves for the board, but the feeling that those at the top enjoyed the power and politics a little too much had some merit. I do feel that some thought that there were some figures involved that enjoyed cosying up to the club a little too much to try and get a paid position with them.
The last point I would like to make is that Wednesdayite has always had a strong Owlstalk background. With the huge numbers of people subscribing to that website, it is perhaps inevitable that this would happen, however it added to the ' closed shop'- ness of the organistaion.
I would therefore do everything possible to distance the supporters group from any one paticular fan website, or alternatively embrace them all with the same vigour.
SWFC is a community club, and the supporters group should reflect this - this is something that came accross loud and clear in your presentation Eddie, and I look forward to seeing some positive changes.
An excellent presentation full of things which can make the supporters club a huge success. However.....No matter what the democratically elected committee of Wednesdayite do, the organisation will still face pathetic comments from the bigots who have opposed everything that has been tried to bring the 'so called' 'Wednesday' supporters together.
How pathetic to even suggest that the name 'Wednesdayite' is not appropriate.....why? Just because the bigots and ill informed think that the organisation has 'stolen the identity' of Wednesday fans..Grow up! I would be very interested to see a list of 'factual' reasons why these bigots object to Wednesdayite.
If people both to look at the achievements the organisation have made over the last couple of years.....Smile tickets.....what better way to support the unfortunate Wednesday fans AND bring revenue to the club? This is just one of the many successful initiatives Wednesdayite have put in place. Just imagine how much more could be done if the TRUE Wednesday supporters put their backing to an organisation which has already put in place the framework for a successful future!
In conclusion
I am a true WEDNESDAYITE, a supporter who backs ANY initiative which proves to be working in the interest of Sheffield Wednesday fans (are they not Wednesdayites?) Run the organisation in a democratic way, bring benefits to its members and to Sheffield Wednesday Football Club, works in harmony with the club, promotes the Club and its fans Nationally and Internationally for good honest football reason.
Well done Eddie, I truly hope your message reaches out to the majority of True WEDNESDAYITES and I am confident that the sensible (the majority) embrance what you are trying to achieve.
Excellent presentation that has really captured the positive and exciting mood that now exists amongst all owls fans. One bit missing is how representative is Wednesday amongst the people of Sheffield, a city that is a multi-cultural city be it residents, students or occasional visitors. We have people representing every corner of the globe, so why is it we don't see the same faces at Hillsborough. The potential supporters that we could welcome to the club to share our heritage, history and most important our future is immense, so where is the strategy to welcome Somalis, Poles, Bangladeshi's in fact anyone with a shared link and love of the city should be seen as a Wednesday fan in the making. Lets make sure we welcome and let everyone remember that Sheffield gave the World Football and Wednesday are the only team in Sheffield worth following.
We support SWFC not wednesdayite, the supporters trust are now pointless with no shareholding in the club.
The vast majority of fans want to watch 90 mins of football each week, the team via results create the matchday experience whether that be good or bad, wednesdayite will die off as the club improves because fans will have nothing to moan about.
