In the build-up to the Hirsty and Friends Coast-to-Coast cycle ride next week, Wednesdayite.com brings you exclusive daily coverage of the event, including the build-up to the big set-off!

With only 6 days to go, Wednesdayite Director Jim Bainbridge starts off our special Coast to Coast blogs with his run up to the off next Tuesday.

"Uncontrollable laughter or a look of genuine concern. Those are the two reactions I get when I tell someone about Coast 2 Coast.

'Yeah, its a 150 mile bike ride from Grange over Sands on the West coast to Filey on the East I tell them. 'We aim to do it in 3 days and hope to raise stacks of cash for the clubs community charity and The Children's Hospital'

So why the two distinct reactions? Well, anyone who has ever met me will know that I hardly possess a racing snake physique. I suppose the thought of me on a bike is funny enough, never mind the idea of me managing to cycle 150 miles on one.

So, for those who display the look of concern, never fear. My role in the Coast 2 Coast challenge is to provide 'vehicular support'. This is a posh term for 'drive Hirsty's tinnies from town to town.' Ah well, the mpg should increase as the weight of said tinnies decreases!

Coast 2 Coast, as I hope you know, is the brainchild of Wednesdayite director Peter Shaw. Peter works tirelessly to try and better the match day experience of some of the less fortunate Sheffield Wednesday fans, and having raised enough money to see a state of the art commentary system installed at SWFC for blind and partially sighted fans, he decided the next challenge would be to raise the money to get a minibus for the clubs community department so that more disabled and special needs supporters who otherwise would struggle just to get to S6 can come along.

So he decided he'd cycle the width of the country. Of course some of his fellow directors wanted to join him. I looked up long enough from my pie and peas to volunteer some logistical support, and here we are with only days to go. Scary!

NOW, PAY ATTENTION, BECAUSE THIS IS THE IMPORTANT BIT. THE WHOLE POINT OF A GROUP OF ORDINARY PEOPLE GIVING UP A WEEK TO DO THIS IS THAT YOU, YES, YOU, WILL BE INSPIRED ENOUGH TO GIVE WHAT YOU CAN TO THE CAUSE. DO THAT BY CLICKING HERE. THANKS.

So whilst the real heros have been out chewing up the tarmac and clocking up the miles what have I been doing? Weeellllll, I have sat in traffic on my daily commute. I've practiced making sandwiches on my knee. I can make multiple cups of tea with 3 kettles at once (memo to self: check you have enough butane cartridges). Camera? check. Sat Nav? check. iPod? check. Looks like I'm set.

But no. A spanner in the works. Vehicular support only works if you have a vehicle to do it in (so to speak). And that's where the best laid plans of mice and Jim come tumbling down. My car lease ran out on 3rd September. The replacement won't arrive until early October. Arrrggghhh.

But then a hero comes along (I wish the missus would stop adding her 'music' to my iPod!). Namely in the guise of former Trust director, Wednesday stalwart and Thornbridge Brewery head Jim Harrison, who has very generously lent us a VW camper van for the week. 'Brilliant' I thought as I was told the news. 'He might even have left a stray keg of McConnel’s Vanilla Stout on board'. Purely for blood strengthening reasons obviously. Then I discover that the bus (that’s what the cool kids like Jim and Jamie Oliver call them) is pink! That’s right, PINK!

Can you imagine the stick I'm going to get off the likes of Hirsty for driving around in a big pink camper van? I think I might be better on a bike!! 'Love, can I borrow your exercise bike and do you know the number for CCC?'

Jim".

What a way to start off this blog, it has made me laugh. I can't get these visions out of my head now - Jim, in the pink, with his pinnie on making tea and sandwiches, hmmm.

Fantastic! Fans like you giving up their holiday entitlement from work for such a worthy cause, just wonderful.

Come on everyone, if Jim and the rest of the team can do so much, then surely we can pull out a few coppers from our pockets - get donating.

Good luck and I look forward to welcoming you back at the Homecoming Event on the 1 October.
