Regular Owls Blogger, Daniel Salamut-Beal, returns to Wednesdayite.com with his take on supporting the Owls being a Family Tradition for him and his family.

Congratulations go to Dan and his wife Naomi on the birth of their first son Jacob who has followed in the Family Tradition and became an Owls member at only 12 hours and 2 minutes old.   Over to Dan...

"My first son has just been born. Within hours his Uncle Richard had made him a member of the Young Owls and a few days later a notification has appeared in the Blackpool match day programme.  Pretty soon he'll going to his first match which got me thinking back to when I first started going to watch Wednesday with my Dad.

As times were hard my Dad always embarrassingly asked if he could lift me over the turnstile? Not great I know but we never had kids for a quid or free season tickets for youngsters, even aged four this was socially unacceptable and I'd hide my face in shame.

Sometimes it worked and sometimes it didn't but I always felt sorry for the poor guy being asked.  I feel however that now my conscience is now clean and whatever monies swindled from the club in my youth had since been paid back ten-fold.  Once in the then roofless Kop we'd either head for the front and spend the match with our faces pressed against the wire eventually walking home with web patterned Spidermanesque faces.

If we were lucky however we'd find a spot just behind the central gangway-the one that still slices the kop in half, being slightly raised it always offered a decent view for most vertically challenged five year old.  Now settled we'd open the big bag of sweets that my Dad always used to bring, the same bag of sweets that were meant to be enjoyed whilst watching the game but never made it past a quarter to three.

At first I used to wish the match to end as soon as it had begun so I could go home but over time I became hooked.  Pretty soon I'd bought my first strip from the little sports shop that used to at the bottom of Eskdale Road, a mixture of sandpaper and iron wool-my Bukta kit was my pride and joy and worn at every opportunity.

After time I developed a worship of heroes in blue and white: Zico, Imre Varadi and ending with David Hirst who still holds a god-like status in my eyes, I actually had my picture taken with him at the beginning of this season which made me feel like a little kid all over again.

I look back at all the things I've watched with Wednesday and realise how lucky I've been.  I hope my son will be able to experience the things I have and feel the pride and joy of wins at Wembley, playing in Europe, promotions, almost winning the league or just the pleasure of watching world class players wear the blue and white shirt.

I hope he enjoys his first goal, Bovril, the walk to and from the match and the energy given off from an excited crowd.  I hope he adheres to the blue and white blood in his veins and wants to go to the match with his Dad.  If all goes to plan in years to come he'll be sharing the same experiences with his son."

Dan.
