Here are our notes for the Owls' League One game against Hartlepool United which took place at Hillsborough on Saturday 16th April 2011.

Down Memory Lane
Any meeting between Wednesday and Hartlepool will inevitably conjure up images of that sunny day at the Millennium Stadium on May 29th, 2005. The League 1 Play-Off Final was, in every sense, a real winner-takes-all clash. It was an evenly contested game but Wednesday were trailing 2-1 when in desperation Paul Sturrock made 3 substitutions for the final 15 minutes, bringing on Patrick Collins, Drew Talbot and top goalscorer Steve MacLean who hadn't played since early March due to injury.

The Owls began to take control, the pressure intensified, but the big turning point came in the 82nd minute when the 'Pools centre-half Chris Westwood – as last man - pulled down Talbot to concede a penalty and earn himself a red card. MacLean celebrated his return by dispatching the spot kick; we then continued to dominate but couldn't find a winner within the 90 minutes.

The match went into extra-time and Glenn Whelan sent us into wonderland with a terrific strike in the first period. The remaining minutes were a little anxious but then with seconds remaining Drew Talbot broke through, rounded the keeper and sent over 40,000 of us Wednesdayites into unadulterated ecstasy!

In Five Days’ Time
Whilst reminiscing about former glories, let's not forget April 21st, 1991. Now that really is a cause for celebration as it remains the last time SWFC won a major trophy, when we beat Manchester United 1-0 at Wembley, to win the Rumbelows League Cup. Goalscorer John Sheridan became a legend at the Club, as did all the players who played that day. But an enduring memory that prevails in the mind of all the players is when the team coach turned into Wembley Way before the game; it was to be greeted with a sea of blue and white with hardly a red scarf in sight. Not only did we lift the Cup that day but the noise generated by our supporters obliterated their rivals inside and outside the ground with a non stop display of passion, encouragement and total commitment from start to finish.

Already an Owl!
A special welcome to Hillsborough today to six-day-old Isabella Kate Hoyland, daughter to Wednesdayite Director Eddie and his wife Laura. Isabella was born on Sunday and by Monday was already sat with Dad and big brother Tommy watching her first Sheffield Derby on DVD. Reports are unconfirmed that when Steve Watson scored for the Owls, she said her first words “can’t wait to stuff them next season, Dad!”
