For those of you who don't get the match day programme, The Sheffield Wednesday Supporters Society, Wednesdayite publish their programme notes on Wednesdayite.com after each home game

Below are our notes for the Owls' FA Cup Replay with Blackpool which took place at Hillsborough on Tuesday 7th February 2012.

NOT FLAGGING WITH THE BIG FLAG!

Our Big Flag was back at its blue-and-whiter-than-blue-and-white best at the weekend against Yeovil following its mid-season clean. It cost us £100 (you should see the size of the washing machine it goes in!) but it was money well-spent, as the loyal Kop regulars who hoist it above their heads every home game will agree I’m sure – as it no longer smells like it’s been used to towel down hippos at Chester Zoo!

Vice-Chair Eddie (I don’t know why I’m talking in the third person – seeing as I’m writing this) took up the mantle of deploying the Big Flag this season, and it’s rapidly becoming a real family business as first my four year old son Tommy came down (mainly to get closer to the pitch to be honest), but then wife Laura and dad Steve lent their muscle to the enterprise – you might not think it, but a flag quite as massive as ours weighs about the same as three Reda Johnsons, so it needs a team effort to haul it down from its weekday home under the North Stand to the front of the Kop and back every home game! So (along with regular help from Wednesdayite member and walking SWFC history book Lee Hicklin amongst others) the pre-match spectacle is the Hoylands’ gift to every Owl – and that you lot surf it so long and so brilliantly is very much appreciated!

Not content with its regular outing up and down the Kop at home games, the Big Flag also enjoys trips to rival stadiums – in fact, it plays away so often that Mrs Flag is filing for divorce. Usually it hitches a lift on the Wednesdayite Away Coach under the strict supervision of coach supremo Jeff Williams, and like many Wednesdayites it lets its hair down a little more on its travels, especially over the Christmas period when it first got covered in mud at Walsall and then soaking wet through at Preston – even capturing an unsuspecting Wednesday fan in its billowing depths when we were trying to put it away! (It’s okay, I think he managed to get out eventually – we’ve not found him in the Big Flag Bag in any case).

So whether at Hillsborough or away from home, hoist that Big Flag high and let’s do what it says – march FORWARD TOGETHER towards promotion!
